Who should have a colonoscopy? If you’ve reached the age of 45 or older, it’s a great time to consider getting screened, as recommended by your doctor, friend, or spouse. Starting at 45 is important because 90% of colon cancers develop after this age. Even if you aren’t experiencing any symptoms like bleeding, pain, or changes in bowel habits, it’s worth noting that most polyps and even small cancers may not cause noticeable symptoms.
While a family history of colorectal cancer is significant, 80% of colorectal cancers actually develop in individuals without any known family history. However, some people may need to begin testing earlier than age 45. If members of your family have a history of colon polyps, colon cancer, or related cancers such as those of the uterus, stomach, or urinary bladder, you might need to start screening sooner. This is an important topic to discuss with your doctor, or feel free to make an appointment to speak with one of our specialists.
